This time it is illegal immigration, an issue of non-enforcement that the voters are ALL SO SURLY in the extreme, demanding their lawmakers to wise-up and SHERIFF their town as the statues require.
Even Liberadio's favorite David Briley, is trying to spin his previously wishy washy message to one more in-line with that of the common sense voters. An obviously insincere effort.
The City Paper inks......Immigration issues back on front burner
Mayoral candidates using last week of campaign to pitch plans
Dozier would “create a confidential reporting system that allows concerned citizens to tip off authorities about local businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants;” would “stop local businesses from knowingly selling vehicles to illegal immigrants by requiring detailed reporting of cash sales of vehicles, investigating those who sell vehicles to buyers who do NOT carry state-mandated insurance, and investigating those who falsely title vehicles;” and would “shut down local operations engaged in human trafficking of illegal immigrants.”
The flier says Dozier would support the relatively new 287(g) program, which allows the Nashville Sheriff’s Office to screen every foreign-born person booked into the Metro jail for information on their immigration status. And lastly, the flier touches on public safety, saying this would be a “top funding priority” for a Dozier administration.
Briley, earlier this month, released a four-page immigration policy paper, and he has mentioned immigration in his two most recent television ads.
In his policy paper, Briley said he would petition the federal government to open an immigration office in Nashville to help legal immigrants avoid “bureaucratic nightmares,” would demand “zero tolerance for employers who hire illegal immigrants,” would make it so the city’s “law enforcement policies and prosecutorial practices … encourage immigrants to assist the Police in solving serious crimes.”
Within the past week and a half, former U.S. Rep. Bob Clement’s campaign has distributed a mass mailer regarding public safety, touching on illegal immigration. According to spokesman Ben Hall, the mailing quotes Clement saying, “I will stand up for a zero-tolerance program for illegal immigrants who commit crimes in our city. Those who do not play by the rules should be deported. Period.”
Earlier, in May, Clement discussed during his “30 ideas in 30 days” campaign, saying he supports 287(g) and that he would petition the federal government to open a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Office in Nashville.
The campaigns of both Karl Dean and Howard Gentry said yesterday that although they have not run advertisements discussing immigration, the two have freely answered questions regarding the subject at candidate forums.
