Well Balanced Attack Gives Mustangs Win at Cheatham County

Using a well balanced attack in all phases of the game, Lipscomb pounded its way to a 42-7 Region 5-3A victory over Cheatham County spoiling the Cubs’ Homecoming for the second time in three years. The victory moves the Mustangs record to 4-0 overall and 2-0 within the region keeping them in a three-way tie for the region lead with Giles County and Marshall County. The Cubs dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in Region 5-3A.

Harrison Daniel continued his touchdown barrage with four more TDs this week. He has crossed the goal line eight times in the past two games and 11 times total this season. Sophomore William Officer led the team in rushing with nine carries for 97 yards averaging 10.8 yards per attempt. Zach Rogers added 93 yards on four carries including a spectacular 64 yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The senior wingback broke through the line and darted down the left sideline. Crossing midfield, he targeted his last potential tackler and made a two-step move that would make all of Music City proud. Daniel added 79 yards on 17 carries while Blake Johnson tallied the final TD in the fourth quarter from 12 yards out giving him a total of 23 yards in four carries in the game. Kyle Lehning completed the game 6-6 in PATs moving his 2008 season total to a perfect 19-19.

The Lipscomb defense kept Cheatham County off balance disrupting their offensive flow for most of the game. The Cubs gained 202 total yards with 95 of those yards coming in two long runs and one long pass play. Ben Brewer and Trevor Hunt led the Mustangs with eight total tackles each. Brewer had a five yard sack included in his numbers. William Stevens contributed seven tackles while Evan Webb had five. Webb also intercepted a Cheatham County pass returning the football 33 yards and into Cubs territory. Kyle Lehning moved his team leading INT totals on the season to three as he also recorded an interception during the game as well. Dallon Hudson and Todd Reasonover had tackles for a loss for the Mustangs.

Lipscomb steps outside of the region for the final time this season next week crossing the river to take on Goodpasture in a CSS regionally televised game. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. at Cougar Stadium.
