David Lipscomb vs. East Literature; Thursday Night District Battle with Playoff Implications

These Week 10 games decide who makes playoffs

David Lipscomb at East Literature: With a win and a Whites Creek win over Maplewood, David Lipscomb is the first-place qualifier from District 10-AA. A win and a Maplewood win would make Lipscomb the second-place qualifier. A loss and a Maplewood win would make Lipscomb an automatic qualifier. Otherwise, the Mustangs (6-3) should be a wild-card selection. East Literature will be a second-place qualifier in 3A with a win. Otherwise, the Eagles could be a wild-card selection.

Whites Creek at Maplewood: A win makes the host Panthers the first-place qualifier from 10-AA in the 4A playoffs. With a loss and an East Literature win, Maplewood would be an automatic qualifier. Otherwise, Maplewood (5-4) could be a wild-card qualifier. Whites Creek (6-3) will make it to the 4A playoffs with a win and could get in as a wild card with a loss.

CPA at Pearl-Cohn: Pearl-Cohn (4-5) is a 3A automatic qualifier if Lipscomb defeats East Literature. Otherwise, Pearl-Cohn could get in a wild-card with a win but may not with a loss.

Thursday Night District Battle with Playoff Implications

Lipscomb enters the Week 10 contest against East Literature with the opportunity to win the District 10-AA championship in the first year of the latest re-alignment by the TSSAA. A Mustang victory gives the program at least a tie for its 7th straight region/district title dating back to 2003. Add a Maplewood loss to that scenario and Lipscomb can claim an outright championship and top tier seeding for the upcoming 2009 Class 4A Playoffs.

Facing East Literature for the first time ever in varsity football, Lipscomb returns to the scene of games played four decades ago. The Mustangs played Tennessee Prepatory School during the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s before the school closed and will walk out onto the field this week to face a first year varsity program in East Literature. The Eagles played a combined varsity and junior varsity schedule in 2008 in the first year of the football program for the growing school.

Averaging 16.6 points per game while yielding 19.6 to the opposition, East Literature started the season with three straight wins to send a message that the “new kid on the block” was here to stay. Veteran coach Bubba Spears is rekindling the football tradition in the hallowed halls of old Nashville East.

Elsewhere in the district, CPA travels to Pearl-Cohn and Maplewood hosts Whites Creek. All three games have playoff implications in both Class 4A and Class 3A.
